Who's flying the flag?

Well - we're not sure who these people are supporting!
30 June 2006

This fantastic picture comes from an AOL news story and was apparently taken in Blyton, Lincolnshire.

Cheshire Police are flying the flag
9 June 2006

Cheshire Police are flying the flag of St George over their headquarters Winsford in support of England in the World Cup.

Downing Street will fly the flag on match days
7 June 2006

The England flag will be flown on match days from Downing Street.  A spokesman said, "It's not insensitive to support one of the home countries in the World Cup," and Mr Blair himself said it was "ridiculous" to suggest that he should not back England in the World Cup just because he was prime minister of four home nations.  The Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, has attached two England flags to her official vehicle.

Philip Schofield and Fern Britton encourage flying of England flag
6 June 2006

Speaking from a studio completely decked out with England flags, This Morning presenters Philip Schofield and Fern Britton discussed the political correctness behind some decisions to ban or restrict the use of the flag during the World Cup.  Fern Britton said, "I like everyone to be patriotic.  Why can't we wave our little red and white flags?".  She then jokingly said, "I'm going to get my teeth done too and my tattoo will be finished today!". Frank Skinner - a guest on the show - also said, "It is fine to be patriotic".

There have already been a few cases of Political Correctness associated with the World Cup including the following.

Summary Further details

Has common sense prevailed?

A woman who went into a Matalan store in Inverness after checking on its website that England shirts were available was shocked to be told that although the shop had received a batch of England shirts they had sent them back. On telephoning the Head Office the lady was told that they were not available in case they offended the public despite the fact that both Brazilian and Italian shirts were in stock in the store.  Matalan have contacted CAPC on two occasions and provided the following further information:  “It is our company’s ranging policy to sell goods in our stores across the UK that are appropriate and meet local customer needs. We forecast no demand for England branded merchandise in our Scottish stores and therefore are not stocking these items.”

The parents of a two year old boy were told to remove his England shirt as it was feared it could spark trouble in the pub they were going to have lunch in.  The Leicester Wetherspoons pub manager told the boy's parents that if they did not remove his shirt or turn it inside out they would have to leave.

New Prospect – in charge of Salford City Council’s stock of 27,000 council homes - has told staff that maintenance workers must not fly any "unauthorised accessories, namely the flag of St George". One worker said "Salford is increasingly becoming a multi-cultural city and the council has to be sensitive to how residents of other nationalities would react to England flags being displayed."  New Prospect declined to expand on why it had taken the stance. A spokesperson said: "We support the comments made in the letter and do not wish to comment further."

Taxi drivers in Blackpool were told that they could not wear football shirts and one cabbie was stopped from wearing a shirt with the England flag in the corner.  After local pressure the rules have been relaxed for the duration of the World Cup and taxi drivers can now wear England shirts provided they are "clean and tasteful".

BBC News

Taxi drivers in Cheltenham were told by council officials that they could not fly flags in support of the England team as they would breach the high public safety standards that people would expect.  Despite there being no such policy in surrounding councils it took a call from the Leader of Cheltenham Council, Councillor Duncan Smith, for this decision to be reversed.

A school in Stoke-on-Trent has lifted a ban on pupils carrying England flags during the World Cup after parents, staff and children protested.

Firemen have been banned from flying England’s flag at their station in Barking during the World Cup in case doing so "could offend ethnic minorities".  Ashfaq Siddique, secretary of Barking Mosque, said: “We’re not offended — it’s a national flag.” A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade apparently said the issue was being dealt with locally.
