Political correctness is not for us

PC is becoming a real threat to democracy. However, at my age I will say what I want, without being offensive to 'normal' people and to hell with the PC brigade. Sue me if you like - got nothing you can take, and you can't take my thoughts and words!

I speak for me, you (pc brigade) do not. Never will you have the right to say on my behalf what is right, politically correct or insulting to me. I have a brain and the common sense to use it.

I am fed up with silly liberals criticising people for using the word "gay" as an insult.  This is NOT homophobic behaviour, it is simply a word and anyone with a brain can tell that there is no intent to insult anyone.

My father has been in the UK since the 70s and has had two of his cars torched in a racial attack, but his shop still sells Union Jack lighters, cufflinks, money clips etc. He was born in Kenya and is of Indian ethnic origin.  However, he always wants an English football team to win in Europe, he loves living here and he is also sick of the PC brigade.

I am worse than sick of them, I am concerned by what is going to happen to the country I was born and bred in.
When I want a coffee "without milk" I am used to asking for a black coffee!  I laugh at jokes such as "Why aren't there more Indians in football? Because everytime they get a corner they open up a shop!"  The "Turbanator" in Only Fools and Horses was hilarious!  I'm just glad at my workplace they announced on the tannoy we will observe a 2 minute silence today and we did.  We also, thankfully, have a Christmas party, not some poorly worded attempt at being PC!

I am Indian in ethnic origin, born a Hindu.  I am not religious as such, but if I was I would never take anything away from this country that was here first.  I am British by birth and nature. I speak English, I support England in the football, I eat English breakfasts.  I sing God Save the Queen with pride and I will always have fond memories of playing British Bulldog as a child in Scouts.
Half Chinese Known As "Takewaway" Hey you guys! I'm half Chinese, hence my nickname Takeaway :) Have I taken offence to it which was given to me by my work colleagues? NO. Do they take offence when I call them 'honky white boys'? NO. The problem arises when when someone has a chip on their shoulder or is looking for something to gain. It is a term of endearment (in a funny sort of way). If these PC people have their way, we would be completely polite, careful not to offend and have no relationship building. Let's lighten up and have some harmless fun.

I am a muslim who has lived in Scotland all my life, my parents came here in 1980 and I think of myself as Scottish, however the PC brigade are making me feel guilty for being here as it is because of immigrants like my parents that the majority of this insane political correctness has come about. My son is in primary 2 and his class put on a ''winter festival'' show, I was the only non-white in the audience and felt so self conscious I went home and cried for hours, I felt responsible for the lack of traditional nativity and Christian celebrations. I think the PC idiots need to rethink their agendas.

First of all, I've always thought women being a 'vulnerable group' or minority flied straight into the face of reason: they make up about half the population. How is it possible that half the population should need "positive" discrimination, and special protection?

People who feel they need special protection from the 'dominant male white middle class heterosexual majority' should have a hard look at themselves and realise that if you see yourself as a 'victim', others will see you as one, too.

As a gay man I've always thought myself rather lucky: self-aware, confident, no need to adhere to the 'traditional' values and lifestyle choices (e.g. marriage, children, mortgage, caravan etc.). I do not need be told by politicians and do-gooders that I'm either vulnerable or incapable of looking after myself.

Another thing I really dislike is people's obsession with what I do in the bedroom: I prefer it not to be the reason why I'm hired for a job.

I first encountered PC-ness in the 80s, when I lived under the regime of the infamous Haringey Council. On one occasion, they even sent me a letter written only in Chinese - a language I don't speak. I had to get my father to translate it. Turns out it was an invitation to some sort of Chinese women's support group. I wondered how impaired they imagined Chinese women to be, if we needed to be herded together into a pigeon-hole and 'helped'.  It didn't make sense then and it doesn't make sense now. True equality will only come when we are all allowed to be different and those differences no longer matter, not when we are treated as being the same as everyone else in our subgroup and the differences to the 'majority' constantly emphasised.  For those of us who have pursued equality for so many years, it is disheartening to see how little has been achieved. Equality is not political correctness. In a truly equal country, the best candidate gets the job even if it is the Anglo-Saxon chap. There is still a long way to go.

In my experience all these over the top things that are going on such as banning christmas nativity and stopping children playing ''hide and seek'' because it might offend Sikh people is just ridiculous and not one person I have spoken to is offended by any of these things. There is a difference between being racist or sexist or anything else which really is unacceptable and just over the top political correctness gone way to far. We are getting the blame for this and we never asked for any of it and don't want it. I mean most people even those who aren't Christian celebrate Christmas so its all just ridiculous.

I'm half Chinese, but I've lived in the UK for my whole life and so can't see why I should be treated differently and skirted around just because of my ethnicity. It seems that all this PC nonsense has been instituted for the sake of doing something rather than for opposing a genuine breach of human rights. In the end it riles up a lot more people than it appeases, British or otherwise.

I'm disabled and confined to wheelchair. I'm SICK of people assuming that because I'm in a wheelchair my brain has sunk into my bottom, so I must be ignored, patronised, PATTED ON THE HEAD (Yes! Honestly!) Or my wheelchair 'pusher' addressed by shopkeepers, who look over my head and explain whatever, whilst I'm the customer, I'm paying, yet I'm the one being ignored!!! I could go on and on... And have you read any official literature, forms etc for the use of disabled or 'seniors' They're all written in idiotspeak, so we of little brain can try to puzzle them out.

My working life has been committed to the traditional dialects of Scotland (Scots). Recently I have also been working in the area of local studies in public libraries. Proponents of traditional (often working-class) culture still tend to believe that the ideology of 'diversity' is good for them - and in theory it should be. But in practice, every minority culture is promoted EXCEPT the indigenous; and national / regional attachments and traditions are seen as atavistic and as an obstacle to the integration of newer ethnic minorities. Members of these minorities, on the contrary, are often delighted to be able to participate in local traditions.

I am gay AND Jewish, great mix eh?  I used to laugh at how PC we were becoming but now it really is a cause of concern, for example, when so many people complained about Chris Moyles using the word 'gay' on radio.  So what?  Do these people honestly think that Chris Moyles is homophobic? Can no-one say anything anymore?  Secondly, who on earth has the right to make our schools and calendars read 'winter festival' or 'winter holidays' instead of Christmas?  I'm Jewish and reasonably religious - myself and every other Jewish person I know agrees that Christmas should stay as Christmas, this is a predominantly Christian country and always will be, why should people of any other religion be offended?????  This December, if I see the word 'winter' tree or 'happy winter' I will be sure to get the graffiti out!
Homosexual Shan I am just so tired of "politically correct" people dividing people who would not have thought about the issue in the first instance.  Thank you for having your campaign.  I have been thinking that there is nothing left in the world but madness and after being turned down for a job I was more qualified and experienced for than the other candidates, due to my colour (white), I feel it is time to do something.

Being female is my "official" qualification for being "protected" by political correctness. But political correctness has gone so far now, that being white and heterosexual forces me into a position where I feel intimidated. I resent having to watch the way I describe a person if I am not allowed to refer to somebody as fat, or black or blind or whatever. It is not an insult, just a statement of facts!!

At only 15 I dread to think of growing up in a nation where I won't be able to experience half the things that this country used to offer, but now "cannot" because of Health and Safety and Political Correctness. It's restrictive and is systematically destroying out integral Britishness by attempting to control how we think and talk to others. I shouldn't have to treat someone special just because they'd rather kiss a man than a woman! I should have to treat them like a human being and that's what I want to do, not have to pussyfoot around my words on the off-chance that they are one of those idiot militants who'll sue! It just isn't right or proper or decent. And I don't want to be protected just because I'm crippled, if I can open my own doors I will and if I feel too tired or the door is too heavy I'm perfectly grateful for someone more capable to do it. Can we just have some common sense around here please?

As a woman of pensionable age, I suppose I am considered a victim on two counts.    I strongly resent this as I am perfectly capable of looking after myself and live a full and active life. I still consider myself as one who can assist others rather than needing assistance. If and when I feel that I need help, I will not hesitate to ask for it - until then, don't presume to tell me what I need!  I am also a Christian and while I am happy for others to follow their own religion or none, I will not apologise for my beliefs and will continue to refer to Christmas, Good Friday, Easter etc. by their proper names.  Despite the popular belief that Christianity is obsolete in this country (which I doubt) its festivals are an integral part of our culture and should be respected by all.

I personally hate PC in all areas for a number of reasons.  Take me for example - I am disabled. If I apply for a job and I meet the qualification criteria and nothing else I am instantly put forward for an interview which is crazy but failing that the firm would be labelled as discriminatory against disabled people. So someone else who might be much better at a job would lose out because of this PC stupidness.  I also believe it gives priority to one "Minority" group over the other.  Polichickens say that religion is the opiate of the masses I say PC is the opiate of polichickens.

Please, not in my name.  I don't need victimhood or special treatment. Political correctness is making artificial differences between people unnecessarily.  Special treatment for minority groups in a lot of cases breeds resentment from those not included who have genuine need of help.
Homosexual Peter Windle
05.11.06
Whether or not men with any degree of homosexual inclination or tendency constitute a 'minority' or not is actually impossible to determine.

Men who do not conform to such a stereotype are not deemed to be 'gay', meaning that all those who do not conform to the stereotypical identifying characteristics but yet have homosexual inclinations, whether openly or otherwise, slip through the net of identification. This brings me back to my argument that it is impossible to determine how many men have a homosexual nature in any measure, so how can homosexuality in people be determined by any degree of accuracy to constitute a minority?

From Andy in Essex
05.12.05

I was shocked to see on a job application form for the Immigration Service an extended "Equal Opportunities" section. Not only did the section ask me my "gender status", ethnic origin and any disabilities but it also asked me about my sexuality...whether I'm straight, gay or bi??? I'm now worried that I might not get the job because I am "White British" but I'm also worried that I'll be patronised by being offered the job because I'm gay. As far as I'm concerned the state should have nothing to do with my private life whatsoever, and that I should be considered for the position based entirely on ability and merit...not my sexuality, race or religion.

I'm completely against political correctness because I believe in freedom of speech/ opinion and I completely don't mind if someone is against my sexuality or wants to make jokes about gays because everyone is entitled to an opinion and a sense of humour. "Minority groups" do not need to be patronised, as I can use my own two feet to progress in world...so PC brigade, just back off!
