Challenging Political Correctness Over recent years we have had some "interesting" correspondence with various bodies and firms about alleged political correctness and thought that it would be an idea to give you some examples of the sort of "offline" work we do. Below are just a handful of examples of the correspondence we have had (quite often via Philip Davies MP - our Parliamentary Spokesman) and if you ever come across something which you feel should be challenged please let us know! 2 July 2007 A letter from Tescos allegedly explaining why a "Suitable for Vegetarians" label was put on a fresh pineapple.
20th November 2007 - UPDATE - also referring to the decision to ban clowns from using balloons in store and whether or not there had been any incidence of latex allergy.
14 June 2007 A letter from Ken Livingstone following a question about why The Londoner Newspaper used capital "B" for Black but a small "w" for white in its articles. The previous reply from the Mayor's Office to a supporter of CAPC had been "Thank you for your email to The Londoner. It is The Londoner's style to cap up the word Black. This is following advise from The Voice who also use this style."
3 May 2007 A letter from the Association of Chief Police Officers responding to our request to know why they could not have a ruling which said that if someone phoned up to report that a shop was selling gollies the police would not investigate unless there were concerns which stretched further than the fact that the person was simply selling dolls.
To see a summary of three cases where people have been under investigation for selling or possessing golly dolls click here or below for our pdf file. March 2007 A reply from the Mayor's Office to a letter asking why there had been a special day in London for women, how much it had cost, when there would be a "capitalmen" day and why they thought that, in light of the agenda, men would not be interested in issues such as childcare, education, workplace issues and travel safety.
Earlier but worthy example Burger King re swirls on the ice cream lids resembling "Allah" A reply from Burger King confirming that they were changing the swirls on the ice-cream lids after Mr Rashad Akhtar of High Wycombe complained that the swirl on the lid resembled the word "Allah" in Arabic script. Our letter did not mention halal meat but it has been referred to in this letter anyway!
